American identity is a funny thing. More so than in any other advanced democratic society (including among our ideological cousins, the French), “democracy” itself is key to our self-understanding. This fact has made the events of January 6 particularly difficult for us to parse. I’ll never forget my own reaction while watching the events unfold: “This just doesn’t happen here!” I kept saying.
Well, of course it did happen here. Now what?
